Zmod action with platelayer

In the weekend 12-13. october 2024 I attended the exhibition "Modelljernbanemessen 2024 Skedsmo", in Skedsmo, Norway, to run my module. 12 years since last exhibition, good to be on the road again. A great weekend, with a lot of nice people and old friends.

I used to have several Zmod modules, but after moving to a smaller apartement, I only have one module left, the Silver Creek module. The length of the module is 1200 mm(4 feet) by 400 mm.

All equipment are from AZL, American Z-line, running DCC.

We got some help from 12 year old Erik Bjørnsen from the city of Kongsberg. He worked as a train engineer using his android phone as a throttle. Great help for us.

Layout Lighting using LED and DMX

The last days I have done some testing using DMX-equipment to control the lighting and the sound on the layout, with promising result.

Earlier I have decided to use LED-strips for the layout lighting, WarmWhite bright LED-strips for the main layout lighting, a Blue LED-strip for the night-"light" and several RGB LED-strips to create the change between day and night + many other effects, like thunder and lighting. And I want to use a PC to control it and sync light and sound.

I have done some test with a RGB-driver using PC serial port and my own software, but have now started to look into use product using the DMX-protocol. DMX-equipment is widely used in Theater and show business to control lights, but the price can be a challenge. But, eBay is your friend and when searching for shops in Hong Kong and China, I have found exactly what I need, cheap RGB-controllers. Combined with many free software options, I have started to play with it. Example items on ebay: DXM > RGB LED Controller, PX24506, Type2. DMX > USB interface.

I am in the process checking different software, and at the moment the most promising is PC-Dimmer2012, which let me setup different shows, controlling light and sound. Another good solution is DMXControl, but it crash at the moment on my PC. A few other I have tested and work with my USB to DMX interface is the following: StageConsole, Freestyler, AbueLites ++. I will also test JMRI to be used with DMX.

My testsetup with the USB to DMX interface, a RGB LED-controller and a LED Strip, all controlled by PC-Dimmer.

The layout will have the following light channels(for now :-) ):

	• DMX LED controller #1 12V/6A
Channel 01: 1 channel UV LED lights/black light
Channel 02: 1 channel strobe control, ligthning effect
 Channel 03: 1 channel spare
• DMX LED controller #2 12V/9A
Channel 04: 1 channel layout main warm white LED strip
Channel 05: 1 channel layout main blue LED strip
Channel 06: 1 channel layout room lighting warm white LED strip
• DMX LED controller #3 12V/9A
Channel 07-09: 3 channels Backlight Group #1 between backdrop and layout - RGB LED strip
• DMX LED controller #4 12V/9A

Big changes in trackplan, now with NYC High Line

One good thing using the PC to develop a layout and to try different trackplans is an activity I love.

Now, when I have started to physically build the first feet of track on the layout, installing the lowest level, its time to freeze the development of the plans.

But, new ideas pop up all the time. The last days, 3-4 major changes have been developed and refined on the layout, hopefully the last current version is the one that shall be build.

From revision 4, there was an elevated track, used to divide the elevated city over the hidden station from the mainstation. I think thats a good idea, and want to keep that.

Playing around on the internet to find real elevated tracks, I come over The High Line project. Yes, thats what I want to model!! The High Line project is about to preserve and develop what remains of the old High Line to public use today. The High Line was originally constructed in the 1930s, to lift dangerous freight trains off Manhattan's streets.

On this The High Line project website I could fine a lot about the history and a lot of old photos that gave me the inspiration to include this as my elevated track on the layout.

One image from the archives, Bell Telephone Company and the High Line running through the building, giving Bell direct connection to the line on their private siding.
This image and many other, can be found here: The High Line In Operation.

Here a blog: High Line

I also found a scan of a booklet, describing the project, from 1934, giving good inspiration:

This gave me the inspiration to set up the final(hopefully) version of the layout(rev 8):

This is a major change in the concept of the layout. The mainstation is flipped around, so the entrance track coming from west now will follow the front of the layout the whole way along the the front board. This gives much more visible running on the mainline and also give a good solution on the main station. The hidden station and the elevated track are also redesigned. Some more turnouts needed to be installed on the mainline, so each track can reach the hidden station.
Now there are also some new tracks in the closed, so I can run trains before the helix even is build. The lower level with Tehachapi loop and the big helix to connect both layouts are still in the plan, but now I can waith with that part and still run some trains.

The development the last days, from revision 4.1 to revision 8:
Click on images for more info:

I think(at the moment) this will be the final version of the trackplan!">

Change in mainstation, hidden staging added

After som more planning, I have changed the mainstation area, to give space for a hidden staging area. The old station has been rotated, and behind it now is space for a staging yard, hidden under the elevated city. That means that the maintrack level, looks to be lower than the cityscene behind it. The cityscene will be mounted so the buildings can be taken out to acccess the staging yard.

The lower level has also been modified to give space for the rotated mainstation. The sigle topevel is cahnged a little, to be incorporated in the city. The rest of the layout is not changed from the previous revision.

I think this new concept on the cityscene will make a better layout. Check out the new revision.

Installation of the LokSound decoder in AZL Challenger

To install the LokSound micro V3.5 decoder and 2 small speakers in the AZL Z-scale Challenger, was a challenge, but it worked out pretty well. I managed to place all in the tender. The inspiration for this, is found in this thread on TrainBoard, where David L in California showed us his conversion.

The hardware is installed, with warm-white LED's for front and rear lamp and also a red and yellow LED's in the drivecab, to simulate the flickering from the burning. Some adjustment in the setting of the lights, etc, are still to be done.

Here some images showing the process:

Here is a rough rendering showing the principle of the layout. On the right, the city building skyline, with relief building along the wall, covering the shadow station on top level. No bridges are installed, no tunnelportals and no water, but hopefully you will have an idea of how I think it could be.

On the lower level you can see the Tehachapi Loop.

A new revision. Always new ideas, but that's ok. I love to play with the PC and try different ideas.

After some input from friends on the net about the Loop, I have done some rework on the layout; Removed the shadow station and created a 2 Level Layout, separated by a helix, with a model of Tehachapi Loop in California on lower level, based on my old drawings for a layout for Tehachapi. The Upper level is very similar to the previous version.
